Xen + Networking = cool May. 14th, 2008 @ 12:58 pm
[info]vulpine137

Yay for finally getting Xen working. Now with networking :) Had [info]strongbow take a look at some network foo, that I was just not getting, and he pointed out some of the normal (non-xen) stuff was 'weird'. So I copied from a non-weird setup, restarted network and boom...I can had virtual machines with networking. *happy dance* Already installed Apache on a VM just for yucks and grins. *grin* This rocks.

Allergic to Texas May. 14th, 2008 @ 10:50 am
[info]vulpine137

Been sneezing like crazy, yay for living in Texas. Other than that, it's been a good evening/day so far. Was a slacker, didn't do laundry like I planned last night. Just didn't feel like doing it. So instead I watched CSI episodes and played with ferrets. Figuring out ways to wear out Whiskey, so he doesn't drive the other two ferrets (especially Arwen) nuts. Went to bed with a copy of More Annotated H.P. Lovecraft. Yes, I'm such a geek I like reading the annotations. Went to sleep around 12:30, brain wouldn't spin down. It does that, so I had some ice cream, read another story (Yay Haunter of the Dark) and went to bed.

Woke up late, and had the mother of all sneezing fits. Staggered out the door late, into traffic. Eww. Get to work, answer the usual ticket foo, deal with a customer who has my direct email (boy, that was a mistake), and now I'm eyeing Xen on Hydra. Trying to decide if I want to try more, or if I want to put it off til I can think straight. Probably the later.

That's about it. Should be another quiet day, I like those. Mood is good, little to no twitchyness or anxiety. Lets hope it stays that way :)

Necklace - Beaded Daisy Chain with Pendant May. 14th, 2008 @ 11:48 pm
[info]keri80
I really only knew what I wanted with the pendant when I made this necklace. I also wanted it to be really long at 25 inches. It is made with lavender seed beads, lavender glass beads, and green seed beads. I beaded it on my breaks from cleaning house so all in all it took about six hours. The pendant is made with glass flower caps and lavender beads, with long seed beads to give it texture. It reminds me of some of the oceanic flora but I haven't named it yet.

The clasp and a close up of the beaded flowers.

I can haz Xen...sorta May. 13th, 2008 @ 04:34 pm
[info]vulpine137

Ok, Hydra's been rebuilt, updated and got Xen installed. Can even create VM's now, after much arguing and gnashing of teeth...but I've yet to get the networking working. So I'll save that hurdle for tomorrow.

Hydra reinstall May. 13th, 2008 @ 11:47 am
[info]vulpine137

Blowing away and recreating my Ubuntu install on Hydra. Seems Xen has issues with Ubuntu 8.04. So I'm dropping back a version, see what that does. Oh well, gives me something to do on a fairly slow day.

Tuesday, the Day of the Weird May. 13th, 2008 @ 10:53 am
[info]vulpine137

Well, it's the Day of the Weird. But so far, only mild weirdness. And a very strong desire to stay in bed. Clean sheets, cool air, and dreams that weren't too bizarre made for a morning just made for napping. So I was less than motivated to go to work. But I did. Almost tried to medicate Arwen, forgot he was done. Instead he got breakfast and I got some ferret cuddle time before playing 'Speed Racer' to get to work on time.

Had a decent, if kinda slow night last night. Gave in to the hedonistic desires and got a cheesesteak on the way home. Tres yum. Watched X-Files and CSI, played with ferrets, tried to get pictures of Whiskey and Nyx with the cell phone, failed. Went to bed after seeing cute pics of a cute friend and reading some Robert E. Howard stuff. Nice night.

Now to get though today in more or less one piece. So I guess I should get back to the Shoggoth Pit. *wave*

Bio update May. 12th, 2008 @ 01:35 pm
[info]vulpine137

Finally got around to updating the LJ bio, with Nyx and Whiskey. You'd think I'd have updated faster, since it's been almost 2 months since they moved in. Oh well, I'm a slacker.

Sickly May. 12th, 2008 @ 01:29 pm
[info]tabbyfoo
I've caught a cold. And it's extremely unwelcome. I just finally got over the deafness and congestion of the last one, and now I've got coughing, stuffy/runny nose and that not-quite-sore-but-tender throat, and I'm a little hoarse.

So here's my dilemma: I have students today, tomorrow and Wednesday. Of these students, 5 of them are going to state on Saturday. State is the biggest competition of the year, and last year I had a student get sick and be unable to sing at the festival, after paying over a hundred dollars to enter and for the accompanist. I'm not too sick to get up and go to work, but I'm worried about exposing these singers to this annoying head cold and cough. So what should I do?

Monday May. 12th, 2008 @ 11:13 am
[info]vulpine137

Well, at work today. Had vague thoughts about taking a mental health day today, decided not too, my mental health is mostly ok. Arwen got his last dose of antibiotic today, yay. Really, not much else of merit to discuss. 6 hours to go. Finances are kinda loopy, overspent this weekend. Hurrah for savings accounts and slush funds though, so it shouldn't be a 'problem'. Just have to be good this week. Stay good Vulpine ;)

In book news, I really REALLY need to get more shelves at home. I also need to bite the bullet and do another cull of the shelves, get rid of things I'll never read. I also should start organzing a bit...I've got history books in 3 different shelves, and I really should merge them. One of these lifetimes... Speaking of lifetimes, is it bad to ponder getting a new apartment just so I have room for the books ? Oh well, the life of a book addict is never easy.

Ok, enough babbling, the shoggoths are calling my name. Ciao.

Ferret Update May. 11th, 2008 @ 07:29 pm
[info]vulpine137

I haven't rambled on massively about my cute feezley roomies. Arwen is doing tons better than 2 weeks ago. Tomorrow morning is the last dose of the last antibiotics. He's been playing like the old weasel, which makes me beyond happy. He's dealing good with the other two, playing and poinging and snuggling and whatnot. Speaking of the other two, Whiskey is looking more like Arwen every day. And acting like him, they're constantly wrestling and chasing each other around. Both also have a weird desire to bite my feet. Whiskey has mostly grown out of his desire to chew on everything, just a few things like me. ;) Nyx is still small, and cute and wildly curious. She wants under the doors in the worse way. She also is more affectionate than either boy, she'll put up with me holding her longer than the others. She also likes climbing up me to look me in the eyes. She doesn't wrestle as much, but she cheerfully joins in the ferret rumbles and chases both boys around. But she rather explore than wrestle. I do expect one of these days for her to show up with a shirt with a 'Mythferret' logo on it.

I'm so so glad Amythest talked me into getting the kits. They keep Arwen happy, and boy do they keep me on my toes. *happy ferret smile*

Weekend Update May. 11th, 2008 @ 04:59 pm
[info]vulpine137

It's been a pretty good weekend. Friday started off with me getting out of work early, medicating the ferret, then meeting up with Amythest. We, plus some friends were originallyh going to go to an outdoor concert, but due to the heat and humidity, we decided that a movie night would be better. So we hung out at her place and watched Back to School. Fun, definitely 80's movie. Came home, played with ferrets and went to bed early. I was a tired fox, and I knew I'd be getting up early for Scarby the next day.

Got up on time, got snagged by [info]techie_ and headed out. Got to Scarby, met up with [info]mustangkitty04, [info]luckycjljw and [info]lifeblender. Always good to see them. Wandered around a bit, ran into [info]dartpoly and some other people. A while later Amythest and Nymaz made it out there as well, but the heat and humidity was not making things easy for Amythest, so they bailed early. But, plans were made to go see Speed Racer in the evening. Wandered around some more, ended up buying myself a nifty fox pin. Finally we headed out, giving [info]luckycjljw and [info]lifeblender a ride home. Then me and [info]techie_ headed off to see Speed Racer. I was pleasantly suprised, it's corny, it's cheesy, but it's fun. Check reality and any sense of physics at the door. But it's fun and funny, and not as bad as the critics are saying. Go see it.

After the movie I headed home, played with ferrets and cleaned up their cage. Went to bed around midnight and slept solid. Woke up this morning, did the usual routine, grabbed Mom for lunch at a local Mexican place, which was good. Then we hit Half Price books, then over to Walmart to do her monthly grocery run. Came back to her place, unloaded things and I came home. Now i'm just vegging out and not doing much of anything. *yawn* Quiet end to the day, quiet is good.

The week wasn't bad. Friday was pretty quiet, given that we were down a man (scheduled time off).
I got "volunteered" for a project at work, but when I found out what it was I was OK with that. More working on the stuff I've been doing at home anyway (which is why [info]vupline137 volunteered me for it).
The gang was going to watch Brave Combo at NRH's last "Spring Music" concert, but the rest of the gang decided it was too hot and humid. By the time I got home from work I didn't really want to go anyway. Just wasn't in the mood for some reason, even though I'd been looking forward to it all week.
We all hung out at Amythest's instead.
After that, went back to my place and mucked around with Wine, got it correctly installed and managed to install Day of Defeat and Guild Wars and get them working. Even managed to copy all the uploads and content off the Windows partition so I didn't have to RE-download 15k+ update files for Guildwars. I no longer have any reason to boot into Windows. If I ever go back to World of Warcraft, I may need to, since [info]techie_ says he didn't have much luck getting that to work in Wine. We'll see.
Heading down to Austin to visit the 'rents for Mother's Day, just as soon as Kestrel gets home from work. I have to run some quick errands first though. Pick up more food and litter for the short, furry folk, put air in the tires, etc.

Leaving work early May. 9th, 2008 @ 04:22 pm
[info]vulpine137

Cutting out of work a little early, it's been a dead slow day. Got Hydra all nice and configured, with the exception of Xen. Not sure why it doesn't want to boot, I think it's something conflicting in the latest version of Ubuntu, since Shub-Internet seemed to go fine (minus Xen's strange desire to reconfigure X for me). So I'm going to bring a different version of Ubuntu on Monday, see how that goes for me. Yay for fleeing early, and yay for the weekend.

Friday: The Day I Add To My Radiation Quota May. 9th, 2008 @ 10:55 am
[info]vulpine137

Well, it's Friday. I'm spending said Friday working on a new computer at work. Part new build to replace my old box, part test box to try some new things that it's been hinted at here that I should learn. So now I have yet another 19" monitor pouring radiation into my geek bod. Wee. New box is named Hydra, one of the gods/leaders of the Deep Ones, along with Dagon. Makes sense when the main box is named Cthulhu ;)

Not alot else, it's Friday. I slept decently last night, in a fairly good mood all in all. Of course, new toy to play with always helps. Ok, enough babbling, time to finish updating Hydra.

Yawn May. 8th, 2008 @ 10:08 pm

OK, so my few-and-far-between posts have been getting even fewer and farther.
Mostly that's due to me deciding to post to the blog that I host, rather than livejournal, and let it's plugins update livejournal. Then I have very little to say, especially where my brother (who reads my other blog) will see it.
I find mostly the things I want to talk about are, well, not so much "personal" in the "this is private stuff, you better be a close friend to see it" way, but in the "only my friends would be interested anyway" and "Why am I defending my choice to post about this stuff to my family?"
So I give up. I'm just going to post "personal" stuff here and only worry about geek stuff on my other blog. Not that there's been much of that posted.
I haven't been reading much either. I miss you guys.
But no, I'm not going to to go back and read the last 2.5 years of stuff everyone has posted. :)

So what brought me back this time? I got a comment on one of my recent entries. So I go to look at the comment. It's a complement on my userpic. The same one I'm using on this entry. Ooook.... and it's no one I've heard of. Clicky, clicky, read userinfo... it's an account that's all of 2 hours old, already has 3 posts, all 3 with lots of very spammish looking links. Run a whois on the 3 domains listed, find they're all through the same registrar, with the same "PrivacyProtect.org" registration. Plonk! We have a spammer account. Whee.
Then I start reading [info]vulpine137's entries, chuckle over a few incidents mentioned from work, decide to start posting on LJ again.

Around dinner, Kestrel points out we have a coupon for a free pizza. I try to redeem it online and keep getting told it's not a valid coupon code. Then I look closely enough to see it expired 3 days ago. Suck.
We ended up going out to IHOP instead.

Now I have a cat trying to remind me it's time for bed, so, night all.
